  • Big ? #5 Collaberating with other Teachers

Collaborating with others is a necessity in almost all professions. As a FCS teacher I will need to collaborate with the administration for funding and approval of any special meals my students prepare. My students and I will collaborate with the drama and music departments for Madrigal dinners and other events. In advanced culinary arts courses and co-op programs the school administration, employers, myself, and students will all need to collaborate together for placements and evaluations. I believe that collaboration is the key to success in almost all businesses and for that reason I will have my students work as part of a team in many of the subjects and assignments I teach. I will need to integrate Math, English, Chemistry and Physical education into my classes and will need to show the students how each of these areas all work together.
  • Big ? #4 Two topics I am excited to teach in my FCS classroom

It is hard for me to think of only 2 topics that I an excited to teach but I think the two I am looking forward to the most would be Nutrition and Culinary Arts.

I have worked in the foodservice industry since 1979 in many places throughout the world and have gained knowledge from some of the best chefs and instructors in the country. The knowledge I have gained about designing or creating flavor-full and attractive meals and passing that information on to others has been something that I have loved to do for many years.

All students need to know what they are putting into their bodies and how it will affect their growth and development and the growth and development of their children (hopefully future children). Nutrition is not just the nutrients that make up a food item but also how those nutrients affect your mind and body. Nutrition is a great way to help students improve memory, sports performance, and can help in the regulation of many illnesses and learning disorders.
  • Big ? #3 Three things I would change about schools

I would like to change the delivery method used by many of the teachers in the schools today to include a well-rounded use of all students multiple intelligences. I feel as though I was left out of many of my classes as a high school student because I had a hard time reading as fast as others in class and most of the teachers did not use multiple teaching methods.

The second thing I would change is the amount of homework assigned and what type of homework that would be assigned. We have been taught that less than 10% of information that is taken home in homework is actually retained by the students. I feel that if homework is assigned it needs to be done using fun projects. By involving the family I feel students will retain more.

The third thing I would change would be the language that students are allowed to use without any repercussions. Students need to learn not just about a subject but also about life. Recently when walking in the halls of a school I noticed teachers just listening to students swear in the halls without saying a word to the students. We need to teach the students how to act and speak in front of future employers and co-workers as well as letting them just be kids. I know that as a restaurant general manager I fired people for dropping the “F” bomb. The rules are in place in almost all schools already, we just need to follow them.

  • Big ?#2 Three things I hold Dear and WILL NOT compromise

There are many things I hold dear and will not compromise but the top 3 would have to be my commitment to family, commitment to the U.S. Navy, and my personal integrity.

First and foremost I will never compromise my family and specifically my wife and children. They are the reason I have had many of the successes I have and are always encouraging me to do great in all of my endeavors. They have stood by me in times of sorrow and have proven their adaptability and success when I have been required to leave for weeks and months at a time with my duties in the Navy, most recently during my deployment to Iraq.

The second thing I will not compromise is my career in the Navy. I have spent over 18 years in the Navy and I have to say they were the best 18 years of my life. The feeling of trust and camaraderie that I have received is only paralleled by that of my family.

The third thing is my personal integrity and thru ought life my father, who I trust and respect more than any other person (don’t tell my wife) has made it very clear, that no mater what other people think, I need to what is right not what is easy. My integrity has gotten me into a little trouble over the years because I would not compromise it, but it has kept me out of many more sticky situations than it has allowed me to be consumed by.

  • Big Question #1 Why do I want to be a Family and Consumer Science Teacher

For the past 30 years I have known that teaching is what I want to do. I have had a very full life and have been to many countries and locations in this wonderful world of ours. My family while growing up was encouraging to each other in every endeavor we would undertake and understood that education was the key to becoming successful in those endeavors. The education could come in the form of hands on experience, apprenticeship programs, trial end error, or formal education but the important thing was the knowledge we received from the educational experience.

I am a father of three and have the same wife I married 17 years ago, which is a blessing in itself. My wife is also a teacher and I have seen the great things she has accomplished by teaching the students rather than the subject. I have worked with her and other teachers over the past 12 years in the schools and have seen students come to life as they learn in a style that bests suits their needs.

I began my adult life as a professional in culinary arts and I still am very involved in this area. I teach culinary arts, hotel management, leadership, and risk management to members of the U.S. Navy on a regular basis and have been in the Navy for over 18 years. The knowledge and experience I have gained in the Navy can be best summed up by the Chief Petty Officers Pledge:

I AM A CHIEF PETTY OFFICER IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY...

§         I SERVE MY COUNTRY AND HER PEOPLE WITH PRIDE AND HONOR.

§         I SEEK NO SPECIAL FAVORS.

§         I MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, AND DO THE BEST I CAN DO.

§         I AM CHARGED WITH A LEADERSHIP ROLE LIKE NO OTHER IN THE WORLD.

§         I DEVELOP JUNIOR OFFICERS AND MOLD MY SAILORS.

§         I ACKNOWLEDGE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACTIONS OF MY SAILORS.

§         BECAUSE THESE SAILORS ARE THE SEEDS OF FUTURE CHIEF PETTY OFFICERS.

§         I LIVE BY THE NAVY'S CORE VALUES OF HONOR, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT.

    §         I SET THE EXAMPLE.

§         I ESTABLISH THE STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE.

§         MY SAILORS ARE STUDENTS AND I AM THEIR TEACHER.

§         I GUIDE AND INFLUENCE THE LIVES OF THESE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN.

§         IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS, I WILL DETERMINE THE QUALITY OF THESE SAILORS.

§         THEY LOOK UP TO ME BECAUSE I TREAT THEM WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT.

§         BECAUSE THEY NEED A LEADER, I AM THERE FOR THEM.

    AFTER ALL...

I AM A CHIEF PETTY OFFICER IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY...
